Arequipa :: Chachani Ascent ::
We depart base camp at 3:30am. My four liters of water are frozen, but I still attach them to my pack. The fact that I believe the water will thaw during the ascent is a good indicator (in hindsight) that I was losing critical assessment ability. In our crampons, we hike on and upward through darkness and icy snow. I visualize my dear friend Inca Jesus for guidance.
